Highlights of Ohayocon:

* Finally getting to wear the yukata I bought in Harajuku last spring (I really need to learn to tie the obi myself)
* Being "the good Katara" thanks entirely to [livejournal.com profile] utenatai
* Almost witnessing/getting into an elevator fight with the drunk six-year-old
* Watching Azula attempt to take over the con and the Phoenix Wright cast perform "Gay or European?" re: Miles Edgeworth at the masquerade
* Hanging out with MORE internet nerdz
* Lacking the willpower to resist buying a tokidoki hoodie
* A home-cooked meal and caaaaake at my parents'

Lots of old school cosplay for some reason—Sailor Moon, Trigun, older shows. Hetalia seems to be the show rising in popularity for costumes. Notable non-anime outfits included a pair of Time Lords, that guy from The Hangover, and a bunch of Lady Gagas. I remember seeing the bubble dress and outfits from Poker Face and Bad Romance, and that's not even half of them. It was awesome.

All in all, a successful convention weekend.

My hotel room is FULL of awesome Avatar costumes. It's pretty sweet.

It was good. Very good, really. A lot more relaxing than I expected/remember cons being, probably because I didn't have to work this one as I have for the past three years. I drove down with a lead foot Friday night, getting there just in time to see the back half of Spoiler: The Panel: The Sequel: The Panel. I got to stay with [livejournal.com profile] roserevolution and the hubs and his brother, and of course they're all delightful. The Hilton ruled (especially the pomegranate martini and goose punch omg) but I kept getting slightly turned around by the new addition to the BCC geography.

Actual con was good--caught a few chunks of panels, got to chat with some people I wanted to see, shit-talked Wizard with some people in the know. It was good times. My roommates were staying an extra night, which gave us lots of time/space in the hotel to decompress after the con. This was a GENIUS idea and I am totally doing it next year. Hell, if you guys are up for sharing again, I'll actually plan ahead and pay a full share.

Got a few bits of swag--a Monokuro Boo shirt, the Ace Attorney artbook set, an Edgeworth cell phone charm, and two nifty Apollo Justice prints from the alley, along with some candy-themed accessories. I seem to have fallen into fandom mode for Phoenix Wright, not that ANYONE NAMED DIA is enabling me in this. Sigh. I also scrounged up new icons, and the one on this post? I LOVE IT SO HARD I CAN'T STAND IT. SRSLY YOU GAIZ, IT MAKES ME LOL IRL.

So! Good weekend. Good con. Much less humidity than usual. A+.

-Jesus Christ, self, DO NOT read the comments on news posts about Judge Sotomayor's confirmations hearings. I don't even mean blogs, I mean mainstream non-slanted articles. They are a cesspool of hideous racism. There's probably at least one person out there saying "hey, I have a problem with this nominee based on these facts over here" but they are apparently not hanging out in the comments section! I wanted to vomit, hit something, and cry. In that order.

-I'm going to Otakon starting Friday evening and crashing with the lovely Ms. [livejournal.com profile] roserevolution. So glad we ran into her at Anime Next like three years ago and demanded her friendship. If anyone's going, PM me your cell # or something. I'll admit it, I'm antsy; I'm going because there are people I want to see, and I have a ton of (irrational?) fondness for the con itself. This'll be #7 for me, the most times I've been to a con. But yeah, I do worry that it'll make me kinda BAWWWWW I MISS MY OLD JOB I WANT TO BE IN THE INDUSTRY AGAIN BAAAAWWW. Like I was saying to [livejournal.com profile] loosewiring, it does feel kind of stupid to feel worried about the emotional impact of an anime convention. But for better or for worse, that sort of thing was a big part of my professional life for years, and thus a big part of how I defined myself. So...it'll be interesting. I think it'll be a good time overall, but I can't guarantee I won't have to breathe deep to forestall a couple of teary moments.

-I finally saw Up. It was awesome. I cried THREE TIMES and I am not a huge movie crier. Yeah, just give it the Oscar now, cuz there's nothing that has or will beat it this year.

So!

1) Who's going to Otakon?
1b) Who might have room for a stray person Friday and Saturday nights? (I might have a group willing to put me up but they're staying at the house of a friend of theirs and I don't want them to feel like they're my only option if the friend is like "ehh...")

2) Who wants to hang out there?

I haven't completely made up my mind, but I'm considering driving down on Friday after work. (In weekend traffic...shoot me now.)

So Otakon was good and all (aside from the horrendous drive back to New York) but I feel I need to address this first:

WHO THOUGHT PUTTING OTAKON TWO WEEKS AFTER EXPO AND A WEEK BEFORE COMIC-CON WAS A GOOD IDEA?
