Ohayocon report!
Thursday
Cut out after my last class and slogged through the rain to my pre-packed car. Noticed lots of new ponds and flooding as I drove home (to switch cars—Van-sama could handle all of us for the weekend, but my little Accord assuredly could not) and wondered if the weather would get better as I went south. It didn’t, and actually slowed me down on the Marysville—Columbus leg. I thought it was going to be another year of everyone sitting around waiting for me, but it was just
arafel and
fadingembers. Eventually picked up
scathachdhu and ScathachSis and headed to the hotel. I officially lost my dignity when the others played Dress Up Dolly with the Fuu kimono and me in the middle of the swank Hyatt lobby. Eh, I was never going to do anything with my dignity anyway, best that we parted ways then. To paraphrase someone at an oooold internet gathering, cons are not about personal dignity.
Found
sarcasticval! Had dinner at Steak `n Shake, which was yummy and filled with fandom talk. Highlight of the meal came shortly after I’d finished regaling the group with the tale of Wayfairer’s “And the fandom spake unto MsAllegro, 'yay, you hath been touched in the wit.' Then spake MsAllegro unto the fandom, 'let my people go;' and the fandom sayeth unto MsAllegro, 'gladly;'” thing she wrote a ways back, a guy a the next table over announced proudly that the quote was from Exodus. We all kind of gaped and wondered if he wanted a cookie for identifying it, and then we laffed and laffed. And then we went back and
arafel bought us shots and we played Katamari Damacy and I lost my soul to its adorably cracked goodness.
Friday
Slept until a decent time but managed to avoid the rush at check-in.
arafel was the lone non-slacker who remembered to pre-reg. Visited
dialogue’s art table and admired the lovely prints, several of which I already have so I was a bad friend and didn’t buy, and then shuffled into the dealer’s room, which ROCKED. Not so much for the stuff available, but for the incredibly wide aisles. So much more spacious than last year and most cons in general…it was orgasmic. I was relatively restrained in spending. Among my purchases were TriMax #11 (knuckle-kisses!), the “Little Windows” doujinshi of pervitude, a “Hentai Inside” computer bag, and the Sesshoumaru action figure. I was very sad that no one had Kagome, as that meant I could not immediately pose them in lewd positions. I did manage to amuse a few people with my proclamations that they should be “making humpies.”
Then we went shopping at Easton and were extremely girly and didn’t make it back until like 4:30. I bought Katamari because I am easily influenced to buy cool things while at cons. AMVs were late and craply, but dinner at Mongolian BBQ was divine as always.
Saturday
Cosplay day! Despite an impudent wig,
arafel looked FABULOUS as Diao Chan and totally inspired me to want to do DW cosplay someday. Our combined efforts made me a fairly cute Fuu, if I do say so myself. She made the kimono and obi and actually wrapped me in it, but I did a bunch of the details—painted the flowers, bought the flying squirrel (it SQUEAKED!), found the appropriately Fuu-esque hair sticks and earrings. Didn’t get a ton of people ask for my pic, but I think that’s because Samurai Champloo is in the infancy of its US popularity. I do think that it’ll be the next big cosplay thing after FMA, as everyone who did know about it was enthusiastic. I’m liek totallie ahead of the times, yo.
The fanfiction panel that Urd moderated was all right. Sailor Mac and Steven Savage had some decent commentary. Urd was kinda wanky but not obscenely so, just…not interesting. I asked
arafel how much she’d pay me to ask a question about Fandom Wank and pocketed $4 from the deal. Their adult fanfiction panel later was a lot more fun, with Steven providing most of the hilarity. I might have to check out Mac’s fanfiction now, because back when I was in Sailor Moon fandom I found her to be extremely middle of the road, but apparently she’d quite popular.
At the Anime Network table, I won a (lame) DVD, as did
fadingembers.
sarcasticval won a manga, and…well, we could see why they were giving these away. Met the Dare 2 Share people and I think we handled it well. Later there was pizza and cheesy bread and the end of the evening found
arafel,
fadingembers and myself in the hotel bar. Surprise surprise.
Sunday
Sad day! Valets did not suck this year, yay. Hugs were given and stories were told at the airport and then it was just Casey and me. We did some shopping and then went to my house to play yet more Katamari and go hot tubbing. I <3 our hot tub so much.
Monday
Katamari. Yes. Again. With some Samurai Warriors this time. When we were on the way back to the airport, we got stuck in some barely-moving traffic due to a major accident up ahead. I mean, major--this SUV was now a convertible and fairly shredded. Poor whoever was in it. We did get to the airport in time for her flight, but then it was delayed, and there’s the whole mess with that that [Bad username or site: ”fadingembers” @ livejournal.com] has already talked about and we sniffled and said goodbye. I drove back to BG, very sad to see the conny weekend end but happy I got to spend it with such cool people.
Pics coming soon!
