The signup form is totally new this year so even a veteran might not be much help... but I'll do my best! =( Where are you (and what exactly do you mean by openID? do you not have an AO3 invite code?)?
Try that before anything else! ;) It's the last day so a bit close, but still worth trying. Maybe work out your requests and offers ahead of time too. I have an AO3 account and have never had to struggle with openID, so I'm no help there, but hopefully this will work out.
You'll need three different requests at least, in three different fandoms. You can make four requests at most. This should give you an idea of what's been requested and offered so far. It's not EVERYTHING, since some people haven't offered and haven't requested nominated fandoms, but it's a lot. You have to offer to write... four fandoms at least, I think? You CAN offer as many as you want, but I think they recommend only going up to ten.
Well I've tried using two independent openID signup services to use one and the site hates them both, so I guess it's down to whether they give me a code. That seems really dumb but I guess most people anticipate the extra hoops and planned accordingly so I'm probably just cranky.
Reading up a bit more: it's not really Yuletide's fault, AO3 is still in beta stages so you need a code and you can't just join. Once you get the code it should be gravy. My friend has a comment here that's a good quick guide.

Yeah, I have a vague idea of that stuff, but it's the actual clicky-signing-up-blahblahblah I think I can only actually look at with an account. idk.

I'm not worrying too much, I mean either I get a signup code and can sign up then or...I can't and I won't need to worry about it? mmmf.
