That RP meme everyone did already. I'm fashionably late.
1) Where and when did you start RPing?
Technically speaking? With
stephen_connor as part of the Sunnydale Socks in 2003, but boys and girls, LJ RP was not then what it is now. That whole group was so accidental that it didn't even develop rules until partway through. Looking back, I can see plenty of things I'd cringe over today, but it was fun so I don't care.
2) Do you RP anywhere other than LJ?
I'd totally play a tabletop game if I could find one. /hasn't looked, is lazy. Maybe if I move closer to
fadingembers we can get one going.
3) Do you play in any public games?
edensphere and
checkmate_rpg. Non-committed comms like
dear_mun and
khdressing if they count.
4) Do you prefer first-person comment spam or prose logging?
Both. For more serious games where I'm really digging into the character's thoughts and identity, prose really helps. But for stuff that's more for having fun with characters and not doing deep self-exploration or advancing a plot, commentspam is fine. I enjoyed
polychromatic for that, even if I wasn't a great Renji. If I searched for a new game, I'd consider commentspams first just because while prose logs are great, writing a lot of them can be very wearying and I might want less of a commitment to them in a third game.
5) What was the first character you ever played?
Connor, from Angel. In my personal 'modern age' of RP...I think it was Kurosaki Ichigo from Bleach at Project Daisychain, because
loveotter is a filthy enabler.
6) Who's your favorite character to play now and why?
Kuchiki Rukia from Bleach because of a combo of loving the character and just knowing her well enough that it's easier for me to gauge what she would think or do in various situations. If I had to pick a particular version...hmm. I don't know that I like my Edensphere Rukia (
snowburned) more than my Checkmate-Rukia (
the_rotator), but she would probably be less fun at Checkmate if I didn't have an excellent Ichigo and Renji to bounce off of, whereas at Edensphere, the premise of the game makes it easier to stay true to herself even without canonmates. (Though I love the Ichigo and Renji there to pieces, so I'm lucky both ways.)
7) What's the longest you've ever consistently played one character?
Rukia at Edensphere, and a large part of that is the underlying plot that made me want to dig into the world. If it had been just another curse-of-the-day spooky jamjar game, I doubted I'd have gotten so invested. I didn't really set down long-term roots there for a good 6-8 months of play as it was. It does help to have strong in-character bonds, but they don't make all the difference.
8) What's your biggest RP pet peeve?
I'm guilty of this on occasion because it's just easier, but it bugs me when dialogue goes like this:
Person A:
[Comment on point 1]
[Comment on point 2]
[Comment on point 3]
Person B:

...essentially setting up three different lines of discussion in the same conversation. It's fine in written IC communication, but not in person. People just don't talk like that. But if you or your partner are slow taggers, sometimes it's a necessary evil. I do try to avoid it, or at least break it up but squishing a couple of comments together in one line—I remember one time doing a reply that went something like "Hey, don't change the subject, we're not done talking about this first thing yet." Or some action in between the bits of dialogue so it's more organic.
9) Do you read RP secrets and the RP anon meme?
Haha, yes. I also poke at physical injuries so I don't have to wonder if/how much they'd hurt. I'd rather know. It's the same thing, for the negative stuff. But I also enjoy a lot of the positive and neutral discussions. It's like fandom anthropology. And there are good things in them; anonymous gets a bad rap for a reason, but anonymous doesn't inherently = bad. I enjoyed a couple of months ago when a group of people on Anontalk planned a happy-secret bombing of RP!S. It worked!
10) If you've played in public before, do you prefer community based or journal based games?
Journal-based. I don't mind community-based, and that certainly has its organizational benefits, but I really like the little customizations, like people's funny entry tags. And I don't find maintaining my flist to be bothersome, but it helps that the mods of my games are very organized about updating the add/drop list.
11) Would you rather play with someone who's very very IC but a mediocre writer or someone who isn't always IC (but not terrible) and a great writer?
In the context of RP, I'm not sure either is all that great. Though if I had the choice between a player who's incredibly awesome but makes it difficult for me to play my character (say, if our characters are married and the player often disappears without letting me know what I should assume they're doing) and a player who's slightly-less awesome but easier to work with, I'll choose the latter. RP is about more than being a sterling, pristine example of characterization.
12) Do you have a "RP partner"?
Mmm...probably not really, although the closest thing is probably
fighting_boy at Checkmate, since the nature of our characters' relationship and development has required a high level of coordination. I do have several people I enjoy playing with across several games.
13) Do you ever stalk any casts, games, or players? Who?
Oh yeah. I enjoy looking at any other version of characters I play, because it's fun to get different takes on them, and obviously I just like the characters. I used to stalk the Bleach cast at
polychromatic before the players I liked dropped.
Sometimes I stalk
the_love_hotel, but not in a good way.
14) In your opinion, which part of an app is the most difficult/annoying?
SAMPLES. I hate samples, be they first-person or log. I understand the need for them; I just hate doing them.
15) Are you one of those people who has to customize their character's journal layout and userinfo?
To a degree. Some characters I never get around to messing with their userinfo, but I always pick a layout that I think fits them, and sometimes I'll customize some extras to go with it. I'm more likely to give nice profiles to the characters I like most.
16) What was your first game?
I'm pretty sure
daisychainrpg came before
polychromatic or
adstringendum.
17) Are there any canons you avoid tagging characters from?
Hetalia. Actually, that's a lie, because my current games don't have Hetalia characters, but I would. Aside from a some skeevy issues with the canon, my brain just breaks when I try to imagine a real person talking to the human representation of a country. I just. How does that even work.
18) Most memorable scene in any thread?
I HAVE TO CHOOSE JUST ONE? THAT'S NOT FAIR. Okay, if I have to pick one...this log from Checkmate. 8 months into things (though we didn't plan a relationship from the start), our Ichigo and Rukia finally reached a tipping point and smooched.
19) Do you RP sex?
I have, but it's not really my thing. I'm more likely to fade to black.
20) Do you play more males or females?
Female. Rukia, Rukia 2.0, Ema Skye, and Angua vs Chad and Wolfwood. I'd guess I'm better at women anyway, but with Edensphere I was mindful of people wanting more of a male/female balance, so that affected my choice of Ema and Angua.
21) What *won't* you RP?
Uh...guro? Scat? I don't know. It's a case-by-case thing.
22) Dressing rooms: yes or no?
Yes, but some work for me better than others. Sometimes I look at
bleach_dressing and just want to shout for all the AUs to GTFO and aren't there any actual canon-based players to play with? But of course that's not fair, because where else are the AUs going to go? Not a lot of games allow them, as far as I know. And it's not my personal playground.
But damn, some of those AUs really are stupid.
23) Ever RPed a pairing?
Yes. Rukia/Phoenix Wright at Edensphere, which was a big surprise to me and kinda ended with a splat but was cute and fun while it lasted, and Rukia/Ichigo at Checkmate, which has been hugely enjoyable because I get to play with someone who sees them like I do, so I feel like we're really getting to do them right. And there have been various bits of subtext in other games. I don't ever play a game for a pairing, though. Tried that once; never again.
24) Favorite place to play: musebox, open posts, public games, private games?
Public games. Museboxes are fun, though I haven't made real use of them yet.
25) Talking RP with someone else who plays your character: fun or awkward?
Fun. No matter how good one player is, someone else is going to have another interesting and useful take on the character. I like exploring the nuances.
...well, if the other person is terrible, it could be awkward, but I'd stay polite. Even crappy players can improve. I know I did.
