Three things

-Jesus Christ, self, DO NOT read the comments on news posts about Judge Sotomayor's confirmations hearings. I don't even mean blogs, I mean mainstream non-slanted articles. They are a cesspool of hideous racism. There's probably at least one person out there saying "hey, I have a problem with this nominee based on these facts over here" but they are apparently not hanging out in the comments section! I wanted to vomit, hit something, and cry. In that order.

-I'm going to Otakon starting Friday evening and crashing with the lovely Ms. roserevolution. So glad we ran into her at Anime Next like three years ago and demanded her friendship. If anyone's going, PM me your cell # or something. I'll admit it, I'm antsy; I'm going because there are people I want to see, and I have a ton of (irrational?) fondness for the con itself. This'll be #7 for me, the most times I've been to a con. But yeah, I do worry that it'll make me kinda BAWWWWW I MISS MY OLD JOB I WANT TO BE IN THE INDUSTRY AGAIN BAAAAWWW. Like I was saying to loosewiring, it does feel kind of stupid to feel worried about the emotional impact of an anime convention. But for better or for worse, that sort of thing was a big part of my professional life for years, and thus a big part of how I defined myself. So...it'll be interesting. I think it'll be a good time overall, but I can't guarantee I won't have to breathe deep to forestall a couple of teary moments.

-I finally saw Up. It was awesome. I cried THREE TIMES and I am not a huge movie crier. Yeah, just give it the Oscar now, cuz there's nothing that has or will beat it this year.

PIXAR'S COMPUTERS RUN ON HUMAN TEARS. I saw Up a few days ago too, and I was pretty much holding back tears from the moment that Carl met Ellie as a kid until... well, the end of the movie. If "holding back" and "sobbing" mean the same thing, anyway.

RE: Sotomayor, this is why I only read a handful of political blogs. Like, Ta Nehisi Coates, and that's it. Anything else with a comments section, I try to avoid. The comments even on the Daily Show and Colbert Report episodes online tend to be awful.

Web 2.0 with it's comments can suck a lot.

This is one of those cases. I have one blog, one, where I regularly read the comments, because people who comment there are civil and even when they disagree with each other it doesn't tend towards the horrible racist crap that 95% of the internets spews out in comments.

The American Bar Association gave her their highest rating.

Just remind yourself of that over and over. And that people on the internets are idiots when presented en masse.

Sotomayor is an excellent judge, rated very highly, well-respected in her community, level-headed, tolerant and above all compassionate. Something the last few months seems to be bringing overt racism out into the light and mainstream. In a way it's good, that sort of darkness can't hide in the light of day and can't fester in an otherwise open society.

It's understandable that you'd miss you old job. I mean, to me, it sounded pretty sweet! I don't even see the mag in the stores anymore, so I dunno if it folded or not...

UP is awesome. Face it, Pixar has hit one outta the park, every. frickin'. time.
