Of course he could. I am convinced that if Renji had tried a little he would have gotten Rukia but he really blew it.

I think they might have happened if Byakuya hadn't interrupted. Tentative, uncertain kids back then-but most kids get a second chance, and once Rukia became a Kuchiki, Renji didn't have that anymore.

My observation was prompted by an anime-only scene, so TECHNICALLY it's not manga canon, but still-after Renji acts like a total overeager dork in class, Rukia comes up to him to tell him she likes that spirit in him and wants him to keep it, and he gets all blushy back and I want to smack him on the back of the head and tell him that THAT is the statement of a girl who would like to make out with him.

Yeah, sometime I wonder if I would've leaned toward RenRuki if we hadn't seen the awesome partnership of Ichigo and Rukia first. It's possible.
