So there's this shojo manga right

And once the heroine eventually starts going out with the hero that everyone likes, the other chicks don't like that. You've seen it before if you know shojo at all. So they call her out onto the roof and she says she won't break up with him, and starts to slap a bitch when she grabs at the necklace given to her by the hero.

"W-what? You're fighting back?"
"If you're up to it."

SO SHE KICKS THEIR ASSES AND WINS!

So yeah, everyone should go read Koukou Debut/High School Debut ASAP.

HECK YES SHOUJO HEROINES WITH GUTS = EPIC WIN.

Funny how I stumble across this right after I go on my first shoujo spree in liek a year xD;; Bitter Virgin, AAA and Seventh Period is a Secret all in one day whut?

*runs off to read Koukou Debut*

IT'S SO COOL AND SHE IS SO PROUD OF IT.

I ready BV too! Good stuff, I hope it gets licensed despite the angst. I'd definitely buy it.

Me like. Where do I find it?

[identity profile] jaina.livejournal.com 2008-09-06 03:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Looks like the first four volumes are already out from Viz, but if you want to sample before buying blind, it's at onemanga.com. That's where I started reading, but I like it so much I'm going to buy the books when I go to Kinokuniya later today.

Oh, that sounds wonderful. I'll absolutely have to check that out.

Here's hoping this signifies a trend in female characterization in manga in general.

[identity profile] jaina.livejournal.com 2008-09-06 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
This is the second series I've read lately that has really good female characterization and doesn't just fall into stereotypes, and they were wildly different series to boot, so I'm happy. We need more of this.

[identity profile] sophiap.livejournal.com 2008-09-06 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Excellent! What's the other series?

[identity profile] jaina.livejournal.com 2008-09-06 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Bitter Virgin, which is as of yet unlicensed but up in its entirety on onemanga. HEAVY angst, serious themes, but really good with good art too, and despite the fact that the main female lead has been horribly abused, she gets a lot more personality than just "victim", which I loved.

That's so strange, I just started reading Koukou debut yesterday! Haruna is so fun.

[identity profile] jaina.livejournal.com 2008-09-06 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
She is such a DORK! But I love it.

Loved reading High School Debut!

I found it after my frantic search for more Sand Chronicles. Haruna is a great heroine. I love the fact that she's so awkward and doesn't back down from any challenge.

"I will coach you... but you have to promise not to fall in love with me!"

HA! Yoh was sunk before he even finished that sentence. :)

I love that. The best is when Yoh comes to rescue her, and she's all scraped and bruised, and he's all, "I'll deal with those girls." And she's all, "Huh? I won!"

And the hero thinks she's SO HOT IN HER BADASSERY!

I love the series so, so much.

Haha. Koukou Debut is goodstuff. It transcends normal shoujo manga. Haruna's so kickass<3

I love that part. She is so awesome, always saying that she is going to protect him. I love it when he remarks that he feels he has a bopyfriend and not a girlfriend. Ain't it cute?♥

I was wondering if you had tried Claymore? Maybe you will like it.

*shameless advertising of fav manga*

[identity profile] jaina.livejournal.com 2008-09-13 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
She is TOTALLY awesome. It's really refreshing to see some kickass (literally and figuratively) heroines even if it's not an action series.

I've seen the first episode of the anime, and the manga is on my list! I'm going to catch up on a few other series I'm reading first, but I do plan to give it a try.

If you liked Haruna you are going to love Clare. Clare is so awesome, I have no words. That and the fact that Claymore is shounen and the main protagonist is female. It kick ass.

[identity profile] jaina.livejournal.com 2008-09-13 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
I'll look forward to it :D
