I don't care if this particular "purity ball" is less skeevy than some of the others, it is still creepy. Oh my god it is still creepy. These things give me hives. Someone link me some dirty, dirty porn to make it go away.

this is one of those things that I like the components, but not the whole. Fathers spending time with their daughters=good! Encouraging abstinence=good! (I'm obv. not on the NO SEX BEFORE MARRIAGE OR DEATH bandwagon, but I think encouraging teenagers to make thoughtful choices re: sex is never bad)...but this whole thing, eww. For one thing (and my dad is not the kind who ever would've taken me to something like this anyway, haha) I would be weirded out if my dad is taking a pledge to protect my virginity. Uh, eww. Not to mention not realistic. How about just pledging to support your daughter, encourage her to make good choices, set an example of what a responsible adult looks like? And while I'm all for promoting abstinence vs. the hookup culture, I think you also have almost a moral obligation to also teach responsible sexual behavior, because you know that not all kids are going to keep their 'virginity pledge' and wouldn't you rather have them do it safely? Not to mention, if you just teach JESUS SEZ DUN HAVE SEX and leave it at that...I work at a catholic school. we have plenty of girls blowing every dude on the block but think they're still a virgin because they've never had penetrative sex. I don't think we do anyone a favor by oversimplifying it like that.

not to mention, if the statistics are true and as many as 1 in 3 girls are sexually abused sometime in their life (most of them before adulthood)...can you imagine how those girls are going to take all this overemphasis on 'impure'=worthless? Because somehow I doubt 'people like this' take special care to reinforce that being abused doesn't make you 'unclean in the eyes of the Lord.'
