Can anyone explain to me how this 24-hour Livejournal "strike" isn't like those old-meme pointless "don't fill up your car on X day" gasoline boycotts?

I think the idea is that it will somehow affect the way LJ interprets its own numbers when it goes to try to sell advertising? Except I don't get where that helps either.

It's not really actively working against it so much as it is doing what we normally do and maybe a little moreso, but I think it's also a reaction to the "WE MUST UNITE AS ONE" feeling the thing is going for. "Oh yeah? Unite this."
