Legato is Meryl's father!
“Come now,” said Legato, temporarily stopping his attack. “Surely you’ve noticed the resemblance. The similar hairstyle, the same partiality to white clothes?”
Meryl thought for a moment. Her hair did look like a feminine version of Legato’s, and she couldn’t deny that she loved to wear white.
Of course! Why didn't I ever notice this before?

I think if anyone's hair is feminie here it's Legato's. That's just ... why, man? WHY?!

No, dammit. Something's not obvious if you have to reach that far up your ass to get it.

May the Plants be with you?
"Meryl, I am your father!"
"NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!"
"Come with me, and together we will rule the galaxy, er, I mean, Gunsmoke, as Father and son, no daughter!"
Both of them paused, and blinked. "What?" Meryl asked, feeling like she should be short one hand.
"That can't be right," Legato said, feeling like he needed to be wearing more black and waving around a large glowing sword.
"Oh. I know what it is," Meryl said, comprehension dawning on her.
"Really? I have never felt so out of character in my life."
"Yeah. It's author influence. Someone wrote about us in a ridiculous situation. Give it a few moments, and it will pass," said the short girl authoritatively.
"Ah. I see. How foolish this spider must be, to think that I would father a child," Legato said calmly licking his hand.
"That would imply that you slept with a woman, and then let her live long enough to bear a child. And that is out of character," Meryl replied.
"Yes. Yes it is."
"So."
"So. I suppose the moment has passed," Legato said, pausing. He concentrated, and Meryl's torture began anew. All was right in the world again.

Kids these days and their wacky theories of genetic inheritance.
This one is crying out for an interpretive dance.
