Cons are teh fun!
Ohayocon rocked. Reality sucks and I miss my girls. ;_; Tear! Already plans are being made for the summer (and a spring break visit to New Jersey for me) but here's my summary of Ohayocon 2004.
Thursday: After a too-late start out of BG (remember children: never make fliers at midnight when you are le tired or they will suck and you'll have to do them over), I finally got to Columbus and picked up
arafel,
fadingembers,
irenak, and
greyvorfeed. Squee! Much geeky reunion happiness ensued. Afterwards we took an hour to get to the con hotel. Note: the con hotel is actually twenty minutes away. A cool front desk guy named Jason checked us in and gave us six keys for the `four' people we had in our room. Shortly thereafter we were joined by
sarcasticval and El Anime Club Presidente Joe, who took off to do gopher duties for the rest of the night since he had no place to stay. On to Steak and Shake and Ladies' Night at Gameworks! I shamed myself at DDR (passed songs, but got winded) and narrowly lost to Arafel at table hockey. We are both skilled and I only bruised one knee this time. Sky Pirates was a big hit; nothing like games where you swoop up and down in roller-coaster chairs. Back at the hotel, we watched Evil Vash in Heat Guy J (Fun! I don't know yet if I'll buy this series, but I definitely want to see more) and KareKano.
Things learned on Thursday:
1. Mapquest sucks way more than I realized.
2. Driving in circles around downtown Columbus is a great way to learn your way.
3. I am frustratingly mediocre at Sky Pirates; I neither truly suck nor kick ass.
Friday: Casey is insane and got up uber-early, and the rest of us slept in for a couple of hours before schlupping downstairs all stinky. No lines for pre-registered people, w00t! After we got clean we did some shopping and I scored The Two Towers for PS2 from Gamestop (cheap!) and Dynasty Warriors III from Best Buy (NEW and cheap! VOOTIE!) Back at the con, the dealer's room was nice but I only got one doujinshi that had some great stories and good art but missed out on the het. Le sigh.
irenak,
arafel and I caught some Get Backers in a video room and
mullenkamp is right; dorks, all of them. Must watch some more of that. This was the day that Arafel and I cosplayed as elegant school uniform Yukino (her) and slobby running suit Yukino (me) from KareKano. We were extremely cute. My favorite part was when a Japanese guy from Sasuga Books saw me and went "Ah, Miyazawa-san!" Went to BD's Mongolian Barbecue for dinner as piles and piles of snow fell on us. Nearly got run over by a snow blower. At the hotel, we had dramatic readings of some REALLY bad fanfics and I nearly peed myself from laughter at Casey's interpretive dance and Arafel's emo get-up. [Nick lived and they got marred.] [not a typo]
Things learned on Friday:
1. Egg, seafood, and wine sauce are not all that bad together.
Saturday: AMVs! I wasn't as nervous as I have been in the past, but I still got a tiny bit freaked out. The volume was too loud and the color was very flat, but there were some good videos. I thought the group in front of me was snarking on Hallelujah but they actually liked it. Paranoid, me? I thought my video was hanging in there but there was definitely one or two that were better-edited. (More on that later.) Randomly, what's with the sudden rash of Lain videos?
The Inuyasha voice-actors panel was a total wankfest. There were some very good questions, but they were mixed in with inane stuff like "when will Inuyasha and Kagome kiss?" and "Will Inuyasha end up with Kikyou or Kagome?" People, these people don't write the script, don't watch the show, and don't even remember all they've recorded. I've said repeatedly that when I meet someone whose work I truly enjoy, I want them to know I enjoy it because it is good and not just because I want two fictional characters to boff. That's just an extra thing. Also, one girl followed up on a comment about singing training the voice to do different acting things with an impromptu audition and proceeded to sing one of the Inuyasha closing things in its entirety. In Japanese. And bad vibrato. Shortly after, the same girl approached the stage for an autograph and helped to incite a rush of fans right up to the panel. I wanted to sink into my seat and die of embarrassment, but the classy (and very funny) VAs handled it like pros. I only had a Miroku plushie with me and Kirby Morrow had to cancel anyway, plus I didn't want an autograph after that, so we just left when it was done. The "Fanfiction: Privilege or Right?" panel was incredibly un-wanky in comparison. They belabored a few unimportant points, but overall it was much better than the Otakon fanfic panel. We stopped by the dealer's room again and it turned out that both
irenak and I had won a free DVD from Funimation. What are the odds? We both chose Fruits Basket vol. 1.
After dinner at Restaurant Hana (Hama?), we poached an artist's table and set up a "Will Write Smut For Attention" table instead. We got a lot of commission as well as pervy commissions. (Shinji x Cheetara OTP!!!1) We also attracted groupies in the form of three girls a little younger than us who I will refer to as the Smut Grrlz. Corrupting the innocent with pervy fanfic, I'm so proud. It was a lot of fun, especially when we got three Trigun cosplayers to re-enact a love triangle fic. The Vash cosplayer expressed everyone's opinion when he posed for a picture with his gun to his head.
Back in the room, we watched some Pretear and Big O and omg I like them both.
Things learned on Friday:
1. Snow is lame.
2. No matter how wanky you think fandom is, it can always get worse.
3. Attractive women offering free porn gets a lot of attention. A lot.
Sunday: Arafel left us early and I hope I didn't acidentally grope her when I got up to hug her before she left. I'm bleary when not fully awake. We didn't do much with the con because of the debacle with the idiot valet (which
fadingembers has fully documented) and it ended up being better that we got to the airport early, as
fadingembers and
irenak got a better flight to replace their cancelled one and
greyvorfeed got upgraded to first class. On the plus side, I got some info on Irena's future Trigun fic and it is both clever and cute. There was food and snarking on Final Fantasy, and then I had to let everyone go through the get of yon security and it was very sad and I'm getting all verklempt thinking about it. Tear!
Nothing very important happened after that. All in all, it was a fabulous weekend. The con was a little disorganized at points, but the company far out-funned the minor annoyances. I can't wait for next time.

*lowers eyes*
NOOOOOO!
*sniffle*

How very, very true.
late but yeah
At my first con three years ago I attended a general fanfiction panel.
It ended up not being about writing or even about something as fun as the legalality issues, but turned out to be 4 fic writers I've never herad of who I guess are BFNs or something (couldn't have been that big if I'd never heard of them in the fandoms they wrote for) talking about their own experiences writing fanfic.
In other words, totally masturbatory and boring as hell. Because masturbation just ain't fun for anyone but you in the end.
Smut Grrlz.
Oooh... can I join?

Damn! I tried for that at Fanime Con and got squat. I was gonna pic FB too.
Have you watched the whole series yet? I know it's been months since you wrote this entry.
