*sighs* Schwarzeneggar? Really?

Well, it's good to know that being famous and groping women is enough to get you elected governor without any actual credentials.

God. I am deeply embarrassed for California. You guys have my sympathies.

*sighs*

Honestly? At this point, I think we deserve him.

I'm hoping for a fairly strong moderate-to-left stance on social issues, because honestly? No hope for the budget. At ALL.

[identity profile] jaina.livejournal.com 2003-10-07 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
*nods* I hope he's a good governor, at least on some issues. My problem with his election is that I think candidates should at least prove their competency. Even Ventura was a mayor first. Also, I really don't approve of a governor who thinks grabbing a woman's tit to "see if they're real" is okay behavior for him because he's a MOO-VEE STAR.

Bitch, piss, moan. Now I'm curious enough to want to read more on why Davis was recalled in the first place--I know little more than that the economy is in the crapper.

[identity profile] missandrony.livejournal.com 2003-10-07 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Personally? I believe Davis is a scapegoat for a bigger problem. The grumbling started during the energy crisis, but you can't say that the man didn't keep the lights on. I mean, we had some blackouts, but...

...now compare this to the east coast, where one little circuit goes out and BOOM! Quarter of the country lights are just DEAD.

(Deregulation began during Davis's predecessor's, Pete Wilson's, administration. Wilson was a Republican and unfortunately, his decisions were made so that larger companies could clear out.)

California's traditionally pretty hostile for businesses, and it's gotten worse, since our labor and environmental laws are tighter than almost anywhere else in the country. (Well, they're just going to rape and pillage anyways, at least California can protect its resources.)

It probably doesn't help that despite Mr. Pro-Business Presidente, California-based companies are strangely lacking in federal help.

So the budget? Is DEAD. Democrats refuse to make cuts, Republicans refuse t pay taxes. Somewhere along the line a car-thief-turned-state-assemblyman (I WISH I were making that up) named Darrell Issa gets the idea to start a push to recall Davis, incorrectly assuming that if he pulled this crazy scheme off, the Republican party would back his nomination.

The Republicans scoffed.

Then the sonofabitch did it.

And the Republicans sent him packing, taking over the recall. The rest is just as circus-y as y'all saw.

*to raise taxes

Am a dork.

Also note, I'm a liberal dork who's been a bit afraid to dig on this matter. This is what I've gleaned from a better-than-average observation over the past 6 months. Personally? I don't think Davis deserved recall by any means, but...

...yeah, California kind of deserves AH-hold.

[identity profile] caitlin.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 06:54 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with you.

Also, I am angered at the fact that Davis is blamed for what Wilson did re: energy deregulation.

Most of ah-nold's people are also Pete Wilson's people.

Meaning it will be Pete Wilson who will be behind the power in the governor's office.

ANd this is what makes me feel that the state will go back into the toilet.

[identity profile] missandrony.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 08:54 am (UTC)(link)
I've already accepted that my tuition will go up obscene amounts, I won't be able to afford my bills, and that everything is going to be BAD for a long time.

So I prefer to focus on and hope that AH-nold's women's and GLBT rights policies will be better than his "financial sense."

[identity profile] sideofzen.livejournal.com 2003-10-07 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Basically, it's just like in sports. When something goes wrong, you blame the head coach.

I think Davis did the best he could under the circumstances, what with the damn Energy companies fucking California over and what have you.

It's times like this I wish I had Val's "Rage" Icon...

[identity profile] enogitna.livejournal.com 2003-10-07 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
My blind seething rage aside, I don't think Arnold will do much damage. The state senate will block a lot of stuff. He also won't get anything DONE, but whatever.

But the recall thing is SUCH STUPID BULLSHIT that it makes me mad it passed, no matter who is in office.

Fucking Schwarzeneggar.

[identity profile] weisshund.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
it's good to know that being famous and groping women is enough to get you elected governor without any actual credentials.

Reagan was elected governor without any political experience either. Is Arnold's groping any worse than
Clinton getting blow jobs in the Oval Office?

[identity profile] kudzita.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
Well, in the sense that the blow jobs were consensual and the groping wasn't, then yeah, I'd say so. But then, that's just me.

[identity profile] greenfish.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
My comment to the "blow job" comment is that, to a certain degree, I agree with you, Kudz, but on the other hand, I think there's a lot of shenanigans going on in the political ring and the celebrity ring that have a lot to do with one word: "Power."

Do I think it was right that Bill Clinton had Monica blowing him in the Oval Office? No, I felt that was completely disrespectful, not only to his wife, but to the country. I don't think people should be blowing other people in a REGULAR office environment, let alone the biggest government office in the nation!

HOWEVER. Do I also find it right that Arnie groped these women? No, definitely not. Whether it was one woman, or dozens of women, I think that's not the point. The point is that it has happened at all... I was kind of skeptical about the situation at first (with the accusations), but it's become apparent that it is a problematic part of the guy's personality. And in my opinion, a leopard rarely changes its spots. So, yes, that does make me weary of him as a person, admittedly.

I felt that the reason a lot of voters who voted for the recall voted for him was because he is recognizable, and they felt that SOME kind of change needed to happen. Most people are not that knowledgable about politics and the workings of the government. In my mind, this election was a lot like the junior high school council elections - the most popular person takes the race. So is it any surprise that the celebrity won??

Finally - for the sake of California, it's ALSO my opinion that a politican is only as good as the people he/she surrounds themselves with, so I hope that Arnold's staff and advisors help lead him and California to making some good decisions about the state. It's not going to be an easy (or popular) road by any means, trying to fix the budget crisis. But someone's got to try and do something...

For your sake, Arnie, I hope you're going to counseling regarding your women's issues, and I hope you do good things for the state.

[identity profile] kudzita.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah, just to clarify, I'm definitely not trying to be a Clinton apologist here; I don't like him for reasons entirely unrelated to the whole sex thing and subsequent lying, but I'm certainly not of the opinion that it's just fine and dandy to be messing about with an intern instead of, you know, trying to do your job.

Re: junior high school council elections - heh, you're right on there. That was also one of the big reasons Liddy Dole won in NC - everybody knew who she was to begin with, so everyone who was running against her had an uphill battle to begin with. Same thing.

[identity profile] jaina.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 07:55 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I could point to [livejournal.com profile] kudzita's and [livejournal.com profile] greenfish's comments--but instead I'll just say that whether or not it is worse, it's not right, and I have a real problem with voting someone with this kind of disrespect to a powerful office, largely on name recognition.

[identity profile] offscreen.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
What's scary is, a friend of mine told me about this article, written by a CONSERVATIVE columnist, that basically proposed the theory that Ahnuld has been quietly engineering his ascent to power for years. I wish I had the link, it was quite a conspiracy theory but definitely within the realm of possibility.

[identity profile] chymerikaen.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 07:50 am (UTC)(link)
Now that is frightening. But, on the other hand, it would explain quite a bit.

[identity profile] nut-meg.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 09:51 am (UTC)(link)
I'd believe it. I have suspected as much for some time. Now I understand that Orrin Hatch wants to remove the requirement that presidential candidates be born in the USA. His proposal would allow anyone who had been a citizen for 20+ years to run. It may sound paranoid but I think it could easily be a highly orchestrated plot.

[identity profile] nut-meg.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 09:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yet another reason NOT to move there. They think the economy is bad now, just wait. It should be close to the level of a third world country by the time he's done.

[identity profile] zelamenomiko.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
All I keep thinking about is that movie Demolition Man with Stallone in it. I think there was a President Schwartzeneggar Memorial Library mentioned in the movie somewhere, and when I first heard he was running for governor I started to screech "THE MOVIE'S COMING TRUE!"
