OH SHI--! HE DID!

[identity profile] jaina.livejournal.com 2008-09-05 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
REPUBLICANS, YOU ARE FUCKING DOING IT WRONG.

UNLESS YOU'RE TRYING TO BE RACIST DOUCHENOZZLES, IN WHICH CASE YOU'RE DOING IT ABSOLUTELY RIGHT.

[identity profile] donna-c-punk.livejournal.com 2008-09-05 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, I don't even like either one of them, but that's fucking WRONGER THAN WRONG. Westmoreland, you're a douchebag.

[identity profile] jaina.livejournal.com 2008-09-05 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
It's totally possible to say "I don't like this candidate and I think they're a bad pick and here's why" without being a huge fuckhole about it. But some people haven't learned that or don't care.

What am I missing? What does "uppity" mean?

[identity profile] jaina.livejournal.com 2008-09-05 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
It's understandable to miss the context if you've never been exposed to it-but basically, the term "uppity," when applied to black men and women, has very racist connotations-the whole "uppity negro trying to get above his station" thing. And anyone as advanced in politics as this guy is should absolutely not be allowed to claim ignorance.

Lemme grab a quote from a friend who said it better-

Unlike snooty, "uppity" has inherent connotations of perceived inferiority.

In the days of slavery/the antebellum period that followed, the term "uppity" specifically referred to a "nigger" who was not obedient- someone who dared to equate himself to his white superiors.

...

The point is that saying "uppity" about the first (even vaguely black) presidential candidate in history, is akin to calling him "boy".

No, there's nothing wrong with the word "boy" as an appellation, but given the wrong context, it turns from a harmless word to one deliberately calculated to remind someone of their station.

I have been boggled ever since I saw that.

This election has taken a sharp turn into the surreal. If someone tried to sell this as a movie, it would be turned down as being too unbelievable.

Oh. I can see why people would be upset at that, yes.

You know, for a party that's supposed to be better at showing a united front and being on message and...

OH--waaaait a second. I get it!

Ah, it hearkens back to Regan calling the man using food stamps to buy a steak in the grocery line a young buck.

It's a less-known word, so it makes the perfect whistle word. Everybody is aware that after "uppity" you say "negro" or another word I don't see fit to type. The only people who know what buck means are, well, the sort of people who think black people getting food stamps is corrupt.

As much as I'm disgusted at this whole thing, I have to admit that the first entry on that last made me snicker.

"Asked to clarify that he used the word 'uppity,' Westmoreland said, 'Uppity, yeah.'

...That's...hysterical, actually. Someone tried to help him out of that hole, and he just dug himself deeper.

ARGH.

That's what I thought, too.
I like how they pointed out that "elitist" is being used as a code word, though.
Palin's entire speech last night was about calling Obama uppity one way or another.

[identity profile] c0untmystars.livejournal.com 2008-09-05 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
That's the part that kills me. They're all, O RLY, are you SURE you want to say that? and he's all YA, RLY. So colossally stupid.

[identity profile] arafel.livejournal.com 2008-09-05 12:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Assholes. I hope that Obama continues to take the moral high ground and lets this stuff slide off. The more the Repugnicans throw insults, and the less he reacts to it, the stupider they look.

[identity profile] cjblackwing.livejournal.com 2008-09-05 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)

I guess this can't really be verified, but I certainly don't doubt its veracity.

It's a story too outrageous to make up, I think?

It wouldn't really surprise me if it were true.

I fucking hate them all, pretty much. I love how the reporter tried to give him a way out, and he's all, 'nope, uppity.'
