In which I am a cranky young lass
Maybe I'm just grouchy because I've only had a single pop tart to eat today yet I cannot eat more, but I saw another "Ichigo and Rukia can't be together so Ichigo marries Orihime" fic and just lost it. In the sense that sitting quietly at my desk while sipping Coke and making annoyed faces is losing it. Nothing against the writer-from my bleary-eyed skim, the writing itself wasn't especially hideous or anything. It was just one fic too many with this plot. Why does this always have to happen?
Seriously, this plot point is birthed in those annoying "Will Ichigo choose Orihime or Rukia?" message board threads that always make me want to shout "NEITHER!" despite the fact that I do ship Ichigo/Rukia. Yeah, it might be hard for Ichigo to find someone who could really understand his freakish lifestyle outside of his circle of friends, but that doesn't mean he HAS to get with one or the other. There are other people. It's not a zero-sum game. There is life beyond high school, even for shonen superheroes. Why can't he meet other women? And why does he HAVE to settle at all? Frankly, it makes him kind of a jackass to commit to someone when his heart isn't in it.
For that matter, it's kind of a diss to Orihime to assume she's so desperate for Kurosaki-kun that she'd take him even if she knows damn well he's really still in love with Rukia. Yeah, she's got some self-esteem issues, but that doesn't mean she'll pathetically pick up someone else's scraps. The fact that they're the scraps of Rukia, who Orihime has admired and envied and felt not as good as for a while, just makes it worse.
Really, these fics make me want to shout "YOU ALL SUCK" at everyone involved. And then I feel a little silly because hey, fictional characters. But still. Yeesh.

So I set it at the fair and had the conversation be about riding the Zipper. (it included the line "Daddy will use his Daddy-powers to start the Zipper for you, Yuzu!" which I think may be the best line of dialog I've ever constructed)
So this reminded me of that, a bit. I WILL CREATE A NEW ONE EXPRESSLY FOR YOU, THOUGH. GIVE ME SEVERAL MINUTES.

Everyone loves the circus – there are lions and tigers and elephants and clowns which give children nightmares and people walking on high wires and riding motorcycles inside of giant spheres and those orange circus peanuts that nobody is ever certain what they are made of and many other enjoyable and fun things for people to do.
Except Ichigo, he didn't love the circus, because he was too cool for love or joy or fun. He preferred to spend his days being either cranky or grumpy or both at the same time. Sometimes he was also angry, but that takes more effort to maintain, so usually he was just cranky or grumpy.
And yet he had come to the circus because his friends had dragged him there. One wonders why such a cranky guy has friends, but that answer is easy – it's because he has naturally blond hair, and in Japan that's so amazing that people will overlook other, lesser faults. He had come with his very good friends Miss Orihime, Miss Rukia, Mr. Chad, Mr. Ishida, and Mr. Renji. Mr. Kon, sadly, had come down with the influenza, and had to stay at home. Only some of these people who accompanied Ichigo had expressed desires in the past to kill him, so he was doing pretty good by those standards.
Rukia spoke. "Ichigo, let us go and partake in circus festivities. There are many things which we may do and see here. Come, it shall our express purpose today to liven and enjoy our youthful lives."
Renji replied to her, "Rukia, you seem to forget that the two of us are well over one-hundred years old. We probably died during the Edo period."
"Yes, but, we look youthful, and that is what matters, does it not?"
Chad said nothing.
"What is there to do at a circus? Can I hit things with a sword?" asked Ichigo.
"No," answered Orihime. "Such things are not, generally, permitted at the circus, without express written permission. Did you fill out the proper forms and papers, and have you brought along your personal seal?"
Ichigo replied glumly, "No, I have not."
Chad said nothing.
"Then I am afraid that you shall find it utterly impossible to engage in swordplay while here," replied Orihime. "Not even my ability to reverse time somehow could take you back to a point where you had such forms, unless there has been a time in the recent past when you had them. "
"A pox upon all forms!" cried Ichigo.
Renji looked thoughtful, "Is this the sort of circus where they have lions and tigers or is this Cirque du Soleil where they have a lot of homoerotic outfits?"
"It is," answered Ishida, "The latter, and not the former."
Chad said nothing.
"Are there, then, rides which one can ride if one purchases expensive tickets to do so?" asked Ichigo, feeling distraught.
"You are thinking," said Orihime, "of a carnival. This is a circus. Though they begin with the letter C, and both involve activities of an entertaining nature, and are similar in some respects, they are not the same thing."
Chad said nothing.
"I refuse to be inactive!" exclaimed Renji. "I am a man of action! I shall take actions. With my body tattoos and attractive physique, I would fit right in with these Cirque du Soleil types, I shall join their antics and amaze all with my physical prowess."
And so he did, and it was very sexy, and all applauded for him, except for Ichigo because he was bitter, and Chad, who said nothing. And afterwards, everyone went home after having a lovely afternoon, except Ichigo was still cranky. (Chad had enjoyed himself, but didn't vocalize it.)
