Harry Potter!

At last, my second chance this year to use this icon, thus justifying its continued presence in my piccy lineup.

I thought getting HP7 at Otakon would be a madhouse, full of /b/tards running around shouting spoilers, but if that happened, it wasn't where I was. I suppose hanging out for most of the con at our booth in the dealer's room probably helped with that. On Friday night, we went to the release party at the B&N earlier in the evening and looked at the activities. Mostly kiddie ones, of course, so all I really did was get a homemade broomstick bookmark made out of a popsicle stick and watch the wildlife peopple talk about the GORGEOUS LIVE OWLS they had there. Totally beautiful. Then we went back to the Wyndham Sheraton, worked on my wig for soldier Rukia cosplay the next day, and came back after midnight to pick up the book.

I liked it.

That's really all that's necessary to say--J.K. Rowling certainly has her flaws as an author, but it was an engaging, fun read, and that's really all I ask from these books. Sometimes I am quite easy to please.

Some bullet point thoughts:

-Snape + Lily. Ahahaha I love that this fanon turned out to be canon! I thought it probably would, since I couldn't think of another reason for him to care so much.
-NEVILLE! HELL YEAH! I only read HP fic that is recced to me, I do not search for it, so if anyone comes across any "Hogwarts revolution while the trio was gone" stories that are good, let me know.
-McGonagall ownzed.
-"NOT MY DAUGHTER, YOU BITCH!" Oh shit yes I love Molly Weasley.
-FRED. D: Man, I thought these two were safe because they're such a pair, it's practically unimaginable to have one without the other. Which is probably why Rowling did it.
-Some people might think the body count was excessive, but I thought it was appropriate given the situation, and a bit ballsy of Rowling, too. That said, OMG ORPHAN BABY WEREWOLF. That's just sad. ;_;
-I TOTALLY thought Harry was going to raise Teddy and was surprised when he apparently didn't. I bet he was a big part of his life, though.
-I would have loved to have read more details of where everyone ended up career-wise, but I can see why she left it to our imaginations, and for the emotional journey, the family he's gained is a bigger deal to Harry.
-I like how the Malfoys ended up so much more ambiguous and human and I would love to know Draco's thought processes during and after the book. Um. I-I guess I want fic?
-ALBUS SEVERUS. AWWW. I are sap. And I don't care what people say, it is by FAR not the weirdest wizarding name around.
-Aberforth XD I wonder who they'll get to play him in the movie?
-Hermione and Ron figuring out to go to the Chamber of Secrets on their own = yes!
-It might be petty, but when Ginny was all BITCH, STEP OFF to Cho, I kinda LOLed.
-I bet Harry and Ginny celebrate sending their kids off to Hogwarts by going home and making with the FURIOUS BANGING.

...okay, does my landlord have a rocking chair on the hardwood floor living room above my room? Interpreting these sounds is an interesting thing.

My guess is that they'll get Michael Gambon to play Aberforth, but mess around a bit with the makeup and hairpieces.

I am so tempted to write fic. I really, truly am.

Oh man, it must have sucked for the kids who were like "Omg real owls! Just like Hedwig!" and then Hedwig gets kedavra'd in the beginning of the book...

Maybe they should have brought a taxidermied one as well?

[identity profile] paradisacorbasi.livejournal.com 2007-07-26 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
I have decided that on the maternal side of Molly's family, where the name does not carry down, there must be someone whose name was Ripley.

I actually hated the Ginny bitch-step-off bit. Because your dig for the boy is more important than defeating Voldemort. Yeah. Good one, Ginny.

Dude, I hated how twee the nextgen names were but Albus Severus melted me into a puddle of sappy goo.

[identity profile] jaina.livejournal.com 2007-07-26 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yes! Carry those Ripley genes. I like that.

I would've thought it indescribably dumb if Ginny stepping in had actually affected the plot in a negative way, but since it didn't really seem to be a problem that she stepped in, I just went heh.

[identity profile] jaina.livejournal.com 2007-07-26 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't mind that. I like Gambon so much more than Dumbledore Mark I.

You should! I might try some drabbles, but nothiing long, as I think trying to inhabit the HP universe for more than a page at a time would hurt my brain.

[identity profile] jaina.livejournal.com 2007-07-26 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Naming the next gen after FOUR different dead people is kinda...uh okay, but man, I can sort of see Harry feeling like he owes it to his parents to name his kids for them, cuz if he just names them after Dumbledore and Snape, he'd feel guilty. Maybe Albus Severus got the two names because Ginny was like "three is enough, stack up whatever names you've got left."

So Albus's full name is actually Albus Severus Sirius Remus Frederick Tonks ("It could be a boy's name!") Weasley-Potter?

[identity profile] jaina.livejournal.com 2007-07-26 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, probably. Or they just get some hamsters or something.

[identity profile] utenatai.livejournal.com 2007-07-26 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
Cheesy epilogue was cheesy.

[identity profile] jaina.livejournal.com 2007-07-26 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
I don't deny that at all. But sometimes I like cheesy.

[identity profile] utenatai.livejournal.com 2007-07-26 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, I think it is Albus Severus Sirius Remus Bob Frederick Tonks Weasly-Potter.

[identity profile] jaina.livejournal.com 2007-07-26 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Bob?

[identity profile] enogitna.livejournal.com 2007-07-26 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
After the bloodbath that was the last few chapters, I needed me some cheese. Even better that it was who-married-who-and-had-little-red-headed-babies cheese. Good with wine. ;)

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2007-07-26 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
I kind of liked the epilogue, even without being heavily into Harry/Ginny or Ron/Hermione. I thought Albus Severus was a good name.

I do think it's funny that there are already communities for Albus Severus/Scorpius slash.

I was actually surprised that the Severus/Lily thing turned out to be true... less so after OotP I guess, but surprised. I guess I thought it would just be Snape's loyalty to Dumbledore that did it. I think it's a very cool development though and am getting into Snape/Lily.

The body count was surprising but I agree she needed to do it. But the orphan baby Animagus made me :( especially since she went through all that setting up that Teddy would be born.

Wow, this is a long comment.

[identity profile] fadingembers.livejournal.com 2007-07-26 02:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Hermione x Midvalley? She's the most brilliant witch of her generation and he's a musical assassin and together they fight crime?

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2007-07-26 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Why yes, yes they do.

(There was this "make me an icon" meme, and I had "unusual pairings" as an interest...)

[identity profile] fadingembers.livejournal.com 2007-07-26 03:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee.

[identity profile] emiweebee.livejournal.com 2007-07-26 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I kinda wish we got her original epilogue, which she said was crap and crowhammered as much info in as possible, but we got every single goddamn Weasley kid from Ted (not Weasley, but whatev) down. Victoire is apparently the eldest, so there are MORE Veewolfs (Werelas?).

You're the third person I saw on my flist tonight who thought the bodycount was excessive. I thought it was low. I guess because I didn't really count the twins as major characters... or Lupin, no matter how much I loved his character. The only major characters who died were Snape and Voldemort. And frankly, I knew both of those had to happen. Where's the DEATH? I thought that at least one of Ron, Hermione, or Ginny was going to kick it.

[identity profile] yma2.livejournal.com 2007-07-29 02:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I really enjoyed the book too. I especially loved Ron, who finally got to shine. And the romance between him and Hermione was just beautiful. I adored their first kiss, it was just perfect!
