I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you
It goes like this: the fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Maybe I've been here before
I know this room, I've walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
Love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

There was a time you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show it to me, do you
I remember when I moved in, you
Your holy dark was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Maybe there's a God above
And all I ever learned from love
Was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you
It's not a cry you can hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

That song was in my head already.

You have no idea how surprising it was to run across it here.

I love that song since Tangles did the lyrics a week after SHREK came out.

And now I have the soundtrack and can play it anytime I want.

That's kinda freaky! I was listening to the soundtrack again yesterday and it goes stuck in my head. It's pretty. *sniff*

It must be some kind of lj-vibe. I think I'll go listen to it again now.

It is about true love. About that feeling that overwhelmes you when you look at someone and you are enlightened by them. That their beauty is such that you cannot help but exclaim it. That the lord will forgive you for using a word meant for him because you have found true love.

Hallelujah

It's a song written for the Drangon and Donkey of course. Listen to the original version (not on the soundtrack) by Leonard Cohen. Jeff Buckley covers it on his album Grace. I heard that Leonard Cohen said that Jeff Buckley's version was so incredible that he wrote the piece for Buckley to sing. The version in Shrek is by John Cale of the Velvet Underground.

It's a song about heartache, loss, and bitterness. Who hasn't felt that way at sometime? "All I've ever learned from love / Is how to shoot at someone who outdrew ya?" Sad, but true. I think it's about the end of a relationship : "I used to live alone before I knew ya." Like they're going back to being alone. But in Shrek it's cool how Donkey and the Dragon reconcile and become great friends. It's amazing what we're willing to do when humbled by a broken heart. Nothing seems quite so fast, life is slowed down, and little details emerge from shadows that allow us to be ultimately human.

What about the religious connotations? "She tied you to the kitchen chair, ...Cut your hair.." Tha is from the Bible. Sampson and Delila. This song has evidence of being about a loss of faith and a comming back to faith.
