ARGH WTF! Tech help, please?

Can anyone tell me why Internet Explorer has suddenly decided to error every time I start it? I keep getting the "not responding" thing and it shuts down. And Semagic's doing the same thing! God knows what other program might. I wasn't even DOING anything at the time it started, just playing City of Heroes! I beg you guys, PLEASE help me figure out wtf to do about this.

I wish I could help but I can't so I will instead profess my icon lurve!!

Sounds like it could be Spyware/Malware. You could try Spybot Search and Destroy and/or Ad-aware to see what's there (they sometimes find different things).

[identity profile] chaosblue.livejournal.com 2005-02-20 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, what James said. And then you should really, really consider feeling the Firefox love.

[identity profile] jaina.livejournal.com 2005-02-20 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
I do have Mozilla, though it's not set as my primary. Handles too much like Netscape, though this might be enough to get me to change over.

[identity profile] jaina.livejournal.com 2005-02-20 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
I ran Spybot and it found a few things. Virus scan is in progress, found a couple minor things, but nothing serious. Tried to run Ad Aware too, but it also froze. I don't know whether that's another incredible freezing program (of which I have discover AIM is one) or if it's just because it can't run while the virus scan does.

Holy fuck, I don't know what else I can do. I suppose I could turn it off and let it rest for a while, but it's been rebooted twice already.

[identity profile] jmcgarry.livejournal.com 2005-02-20 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
That's cuz its the same engine as Netscrap.

[identity profile] jmcgarry.livejournal.com 2005-02-20 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
Ad-ware can freeze when some virus scan programs are running, I've seen it, not common, but not completely unheard of. Does your campus have an anti-malware/spyware program you could download? Hmmm, ok of these don't work, find and d/l a program called HiJackThis and post the log file, [livejournal.com profile] chaosblue or I should be able to parse it and see if there's something weird.

[identity profile] chaosblue.livejournal.com 2005-02-20 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
Same engine, but infinitely more usable. My biggest beef is the lack of multimedia support due to M$'s stranglehold, but I'm hoping that will lessen over time.

Dude, I think you're clean. Still have the problem after the cleanup?

[identity profile] jmcgarry.livejournal.com 2005-02-20 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
Its better than Konqueror under Linux too. Its still pretty new code relatively, more support will come with time and more open source tends to make even more open source.

[identity profile] chaosblue.livejournal.com 2005-02-20 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
Linux browsers in general make me weep, for I have come to love the bling-bling. Firefox gives me the bling without the headache, which is most of the reason I wish I could marry it. I also feel the need to point out that since I've switch to Firefox, I've been able to cut my AV/Spybot scans to once a week, when I was having to do it daily while using IE.

Aaah, open source. <3

[identity profile] jmcgarry.livejournal.com 2005-02-20 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
At work, my IE is really locked down (my choice) and I'm pretty sure of safety with a firewall and some immunizations, but its a big p.i.t.a. to set up.

[identity profile] chaosblue.livejournal.com 2005-02-20 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
We who are too lazy to bother salute you. XD You'd think that having all the updates plus three firewalls and two ad/spyware busters and their immunizations would stop it. >_
ext_44927: I made this :) (Default)

[identity profile] aevalin.livejournal.com 2005-02-22 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
It's erroring when you open IE or it's popping up all on it's own?

I'm switching my office to Firefox one by one. I've been using it for a while, and they are seeing the logic. PLUS I'm so freaking tired of fixing their machines. Sigh. I gotta concur that there ain't nothing in that HijackThis log - unless of course you didn't install those games :P

You know there is some spyware that actually breaks your IE or worse your connection to the net when you uninstall. Try Firefox. Is it working?

[identity profile] jaina.livejournal.com 2005-02-23 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
Well now it's kind of a non-issue...I did a system restore and now the computer doesn't work at all.
