Ex Post Wanko
I wasn't originally going to post this. Well, I thought of it in the car driving back to school the other night, and I wanted to, but usually I never get around to actually typing the lj-entries I compose while driving. But my fiction workshop was cancelled, so I have some free time while I putz around in lab, getting paid 8 bucks an hour to do not much.
Looking back on the recent wank, I noticed that people who weren't already snickering along with me tended to think two things about "our side" (which apparently consists of myself,
fadingembers, and
arafel who wasn't even there for the whole thing, but for the sake of simplicity I'm just going to talk about myself):
a) I'm a bitch.
b) I have delusions of being a fandom goddess who tries to tell other people what they can write.
Okay, taking these one at a time. I'm a bitch? Well...duh. I admit this. When I wasn't really pissed off by various people's childishness, I was laughing at it. Stone me if you must. The bottom line is that I much prefer a drama-free existence for my own journal and even moreso for the communities I moderate, but if people feel compelled to bring it, I'm going to take the time out to bask in the amusement of it. So if this makes me a bitch, then I confess. This isn't a surprise.
Ah, Point B...Point B. Huh. I will admit that this one had me a bit o_O. Looking just at this specific instance of wank, I don't see how it makes any sense. I'm a het fan. There are yaoi pairings I can appreciate, but in this fandom I'm fairly strictly a penis + coochie fan. So if I were inclined to ban users based on whether or not I like their fic, I'd be more likely to ban the yaoi fans, right? That...didn't happen. Obviously. Plus, not to be all "some of my best friends like yaoi!" or anything, but well...hi there,
mistressrenet,
angstymcgoth, and
uiggu! *blows kisses* And if I were inclined to ban someone based on who their friends were, you'd think I'd ban the friend, right? Uh huh.
So let's dial it back a bit. Look beyond this situation specifically. As a fan, here are things I do or have done:
* Read fic I like
* Avoid fic by authors I know I don't like
* Avoid fic subjects I know I don't like
* Welcomed people whose fic I don't like to participate in comms I mod
* Had pleasant conversation with people I've banned
* Get bored and read badfic to amuse myself
* Discuss fic with friends. Sometimes this involves laughing at it.
* Leave positive & constructive reviews for fic I enjoy
* Leave negative & constructive reviews for fics I have issues with, but generally only if I think the author won't flip out
* Occasionally leave snarky reviews for fics that are beyond redemption (total Mary Sue, no such thing as spelling or grammar)
I don't think I've left anything out. In any case, if these things are evidence of Being a Bad Fan, then SHIT! The whole fandom's going to hell!
Here are things I DO NOT DO and HAVE NEVER DONE:
* Told someone what kind of fic to write
* TOSed someone's fic because I don't like it
* TOSed someone's fic because I don't like the author
* Excluded someone from a community or site I run because of the fic they write (Mayfly doesn't count, it's supposed to be VashxMeryl)
* Asked or expected a friend to sever contact with another fan I don't like
* Decided someone was an asshat based on their fic
* Harassed or otherwise bothered someone who doesn't like my fic
* Expected others to work around my personal views in the fandom
I'll cop to being a bitch. People can decide for themselves whether I'm at all fun or interesting. But thinking I'm a fandom goddess? Proclaiming what fic is acceptable? Bitch, please, get your head out of your ass because that's the only place where such things have happened, certainly not in a little place we like to call the real world. I don't care what fic people write, because I can always not read it. One time I became pretty good friends with someone after pointing out to her what a ginormous Mary Sue she was writing. I didn't like her fic. She knew it, I knew it--and neither of us cared all that much. I don't care whether you write an epic fic based on everything I hate as long as it's not plastered across my monitor, and I take care of that myself by not clicking the link.
Maybe it has nothing to do with the quality of your fic or your genre or pairings of choice. Maybe you're just a class-A obnoxious asshat. (General "you" here. I've known far, far too many obnoxious asshats, alas.) I'm a bitch? Sure. This post pretty much proves that. Trying to boss around the fandom? Fuck that noise.

No, wait. Are you Anne Rice, or am I Anne Rice? Can I be A.N. Roquelaire?
This is all your denial that we're a closed, tight-knit clique (who allows membership to anyone who is friendly and has two brain cells to rub together). THE IGNORANCE, IT BURNS! (Er, that's just the chlamydia.)

*deletes own wanking about authors who are nice people but write fic she can't stand*
I can relate. :D

... Coochie? Ah, now I remember why I'm a yaoi fan. ::dies laughing::
::blows kisses back:: I never get tired of reading my own name in other people's journals. Woo!

Still in Chicago for another few hours, plane at 9pm... I don't want to leave! It's too cool (literally -- it's 52 degrees friggin'
Fahrenheit! I might as well have stayed at home on the weather front!), and the election stuff is so exciting, and the people are (mostly) so friendly, and you actually feel like you want to tip the waiters, and stuff's so cheap, and... I don't wanna leave!
