Sigh.

Well, I'm getting closer and closer to being fucked in terms of job opportunities. To recap:

-Didn't get a job at the video place.
-Old boss from alst summer doesn't need any help.

My options are now: Temp agency or *shudders* Dairy Queen. I know a bunch of you have done the temp thing before, so could you possibly share some insights? I'd much rather work there, but I worry about steady employment. Dairy Queen would suck beyond the telling but I made okay money there.

Sigh. This summer is going to both suck and blow.

*hugs* I'm sorry to hear it. Wish things could have worked out better.

temp agency - sign up for multiple ones. find out from locals which ones are the most reliable, and how each of them works (do you call every morning; do they call you?) sometimes, you can get really lucky - i got lucky one summer and got a research gig on a contract basis for pacbell through an employment agency. good pay, no health insurance/benefits, but since i still was on my parents' insurance that didn't matter.

Temping, ugh. I did that one summer and had little luck. Sign up early, and ask explicitly for "long term" (1-3 month) assignments. Be willing to do damn near anything. Other than that, I have no advice.

I temped last year when I was unemployed, and I signed up at four of our local agencies. Some are really good, some are not. I recommend Manpower if there's one near you. They have nice secretarial type jobs if you can type and do Excel. I got a job filing and stuff for a local boat company's main office, and even got Thanksgiving and Christmas bonuses. Often, they are good "foot-in-the-door" jobs, or at the very least you make contacts.

I'd definitely recommend signing up with a few of the good agencies. Different agencies operate in different ways, and I'll just summarise my experiences with the agencies I've dealt with.

Try to register in person at the agency (some agencies here let you register online) -that way they can put a face to the name/resume. If you want to, phone them first, tell them what kind of thing your looking for, and ask to make an appointment to go along and register (some might tell you 'turn up any time' others will arrange a time). Find out whether they want you to bring a resume, or anything else.

When you go to register, they'll probably get you to fill in some forms - and they're usually just a rehash of everything on your resume. The form will probably also ask for all the software packages you can use (or rather, tick the boxes for which ones you've used). Be prepared to do some tests - eg typing, data entry, Word, Excel.

Someone might then talk to you - find out what you can do, what you're looking for, where you're prepared to travel to, etc. Use this person as your main contact at the agency to begin with.

Afterwards, call them every couple of days to see whether anything has come in - It's best to keep in contact with them, so they don't forget about you, since they might have lots of people on their books at any one time. They'll remember those who they've spoken to recently when assignments come in.

I'm sending you a four leaf clover tomorrow. I don't know how good they are (I've been finding them my whole life) but hopefully it'll bring you a little luck. ^^

Temp agency's....beware of the people on crack, and the meth freaks. That's all I have to say.

I feel your pain. I don't want to go back to Boscov's. Never.
